Hit the Road on a Bookcation
Hit the Road on a Bookcation Let me inspire your students to enjoy literature in a whole new way! As I introduce readers to my newest novel, When I Hit the Road, I’ll show how the books we read take us on the road to anywhere and everywhere. Stories allow us to travel to other cities and states, faraway countries, even to the past or the future, and we can embark on these trips anytime we want. We don’t even have to pack a toothbrush! Students will gain a new appreciation for the excitement and adventure that awaits them between the covers of a really good book.

A Trip to the Okefenokee Swamp: An Author’s Journey into Historical Fiction
A Trip to the Okefenokee Swamp: An Author’s Journey into Historical Fiction. This program is full of history and adventure and allows students a peek into the past. As I share details of my research for writing Elsie Mae Has Something to Say, I take students deep into the mysteries of the Okefenokee Swamp to show how authors gather information to create authentic characters and an historically accurate plot. Students will see how they too could gather information to use in their own writing.

Ratchet Up Your Writing: Some Assembly Required.

Ratchet Up Your Writing: Some Assembly Required. Want to learn how something works? Take it apart, study it, and put it back together again. In this presentation, using a small engine as a metaphor, I teach students about writing.

  • First, I demonstrate how to take apart a small engine.
  • Then, I show students how it works.
  • Finally, I put it back together again.

My demonstration gives students a tangible example of “process.”  I use this example to show them how the same process can be applied to their own writing.
I’m more than an author talking about my path to publication.  I’m a teacher giving students a better understanding of the writing process in order to enable them to become better writers and better readers.

Testimonials

Here's what students and librarians have to say after a visit from Nancy:

Here's what teachers and students are saying about Nancy’s books:
I'm just gonna get to the point. I LOVED Always Abigail. Especially since I'm one of the biggest outcasts in my grade. After reading Always Abigail, I was like. OMG I NEED MORE!!!!!!!:) I hope you can make a book 2 with more drama, crushes, and humor."
Always,
— A fan
I'm a fifth grade language arts teacher and discovered your book one day while browsing at Barnes and Noble. I bought a copy of your book and devoured it that weekend, and I couldn't wait to bring it to school for a book talk. Never got to the book talk – kids spotted it on my desk and immediately were clamoring to read it – we even had a Ratchet list going!"
I am reading This Journal Belongs to Ratchet for the seventh time in three months. I absolutely love it!"
