Ratchet Up Your Writing: Some Assembly Required. Want to learn how something works? Take it apart, study it, and put it back together again. In this presentation, using a small engine as a metaphor, I teach students about writing.
- First, I demonstrate how to take apart a small engine.
- Then, I show students how it works.
- Finally, I put it back together again.
My demonstration gives students a tangible example of “process.” I use this example to show them how the same process can be applied to their own writing.
I’m more than an author talking about my path to publication. I’m a teacher giving students a better understanding of the writing process in order to enable them to become better writers and better readers.

You came to my school last week and read to us a couple pages of When I Hit the Road and I loved it. I have read Elsie Mae Has Something to Say, and Always Abigail they were both great. Right now I am reading Just Like Me and I love it too. I can’t wait for your new book to come out!!!!!"

I love your interesting comparison of engine parts to writing elements. It's genius! It also complements the Ratchet theme."

Here's what teachers and students are saying about Nancy’s books:
I'm just gonna get to the point. I LOVED Always Abigail. Especially since I'm one of the biggest outcasts in my grade. After reading Always Abigail, I was like. OMG I NEED MORE!!!!!!!:) I hope you can make a book 2 with more drama, crushes, and humor."
Always,
— A fan
I'm a fifth grade language arts teacher and discovered your book one day while browsing at Barnes and Noble. I bought a copy of your book and devoured it that weekend, and I couldn't wait to bring it to school for a book talk. Never got to the book talk – kids spotted it on my desk and immediately were clamoring to read it – we even had a Ratchet list going!"
I am reading This Journal Belongs to Ratchet for the seventh time in three months. I absolutely love it!"
